This semester I have decided to take a class on the conflict of the Middle East because I wanted to know more about what is happening there and exactly WHY we are so involved! And let me tell you, it is such an overload. My class is compromised of 95% PoliSci majors and boy, they piss me off!! Politics is such a touchy subject because I feel that it is one of the core reasons why there are conflicts today, I actually would change that to political power. Mhmm!
So in class yesterday, my classmate was so furious (he even admitted this conflict was mind-boggling because evidently he think he knew the answer to solve this!) as to why political leaders cannot see that providing sovereignty and land is needed for the Palestinian people. He then went proceeded by wondering why the United States or the United Nations will not PUSH for a Palestinian state. I had to decided to open my mouth. (I had to constantly remind them that I am indefinitely no expert at this subject, because obviously all these peeps are PoliSci majors who think they know how to solve this) As to my response, I had stated that it is evident that a Palestinian state is needed; however, creating a state for the Palestinians within the state of Israel does not mean that conflict will be resolved. People are going to continue fighting and civilians will continuously be used as human shields! The US is DEFINITELY not going to say much because why? BECAUSE ISRAEL IS OUR ALLY!(i know ally looks weird, i personally thought it was spelled 'alli,' apparently not) WE SUPPLY ISRAELI TROOPS WITH MILITARY WEAPONS! It's not talked about because we all have been busy with the Iraqi occupation and what not. Now, imagine if there was a Palestinian state created within Israel. United States would continue sending military aid to Israel by means of our troops, more money spent and probably some other stuff... then I am sure Britian, France, China and Russia will intervene and what would we have... World War 3! (And we all know that no one has money to find that kine war!) Ok this I know may sound a little crazy, but I honestly think that will happen and that is why the United States does not make the Israeli-Palestinian conflict such a big issue. Most people know that we are allies to Israel; however, the media does never talk about any international intervention especially from the United States because they don't want us citizens to be thinking crazy thoughts. I then pointed out that the United Nations is the one, alongside the US, who created and supported the creation of the state of Israel... why the hell would they create a state of Palestine? Being involved with Model United Nations, I think it would take took long for even the UN to address the issue of creating a new state. And remember the United States was the one who originally created the United Nations, formerly known as the League of Nations... and the US being one of the worlds super-super power, no one wants to defy us or go on our bad side, except maybe some "belligerents" - think back to those extremists on 9/11! So if we don't want to create a state for Palestine, then we won't! Bottom line, United States calls all the shots.
Ok I'm done. It is almost 1 am here and I am pooped. If I have learned anything this semester yet, it is that borders create conflicts. Let people be! Don't drive a bulldozer through one's home!
Um I am sure I can go into detail with this stuff but I need to practice my 'olelo Hawai'i for my test tomorrow! Aaah I really want to get an A!
Goodnight world!
